So you’ve purchased the Character Folio for Savage Rifts on either PEG Inc or DriveThruRPG. Congrats! But why is it worth $5?! It’s just a character sheet. Boy have you made an excellent purchase. Even if you are on the fence, this is the Juicer of all character sheets. So buckle up in your Glitterboy..we are going for a ride.
First off, be sure you are using Adobe Acrobat (for PC or Mac, not mobile). This can be just the reader or the full pro version. There are scripts and advanced layers in this sheet, and you can’t take full advantage of those in other PDF readers as easily. If you found one that works with all of these features though, GREAT! For the purpose of this blog though, we’ll be sticking with Adobe Acrobat.
There are 10 pages to this PDF. We’ve added bookmarks to help you jump around quickly.
Hiding the blue border of all the form fields.
This isn’t a feature of the sheet necessarily, but it definitely makes your playing experience a little better by hiding all of the “blue form field highlights”. The fields will still be fillable, but they won’t have the obnoxious blue boxes all over the place that you see in this screen shot:
To get rid of this go to the “EDIT” menu and select Preferences.
Then find “Forms” under the Categories, and uncheck the box that reads: Show border hover color for fields.
Now your Character Folio looks like it was intended to.
Throughout the character sheet are some custom images. You can click on these, and replace them with files on your computer.
When you click on any of these places you’ll get a popup to Select an Image or…Clear the image that is there. Maybe you want that to be blank so you can draw something, or you just like having more blank space.
Layers - Text and Backgrounds
In Adobe you can open up Layers from the left hand menu. Once you do you'll a few sections. Expand the one labeled "Text and Backgrounds".
By default we have “Text Layer”, “Blue Boxes and Borders”, and “Background – Standard” selected.
Want a more printer friendly sheet? Then uncheck Blue Boxes, and Background, and select Borders Only. You’ll have a super minimalistic sheet in no time. Print in “Grey Scale” to turn the Rifts and Savage Worlds logo to black and white.
Add Tentacles to any combination to make things “better”.
Layers – Faction Icons
By default, the Coalition Skull is the symbol you’ll see throughout the character sheet. You can swap this out with 2 Tomorrow Legion icons, or the Splugorth Eye Con! (Don’t forget the tentacles from Text and Backgrounds)
Layers – Health Levels
There are Edges you can take to increase your Wound levels, or maybe you started at a different size (looking at you Dragon Hatchling). You can toggle the Standard, Tough as Nails, or Tougher Than Nails layers. Be sure to unselect the ones you aren’t using or they overlap.
Layers – Robot and Vehicle Health Levels
Just like the Page 1 Health Levels, your Page 4 Robot Armor and Vehicles can have different Health Levels based on their size.
RESET – Oops you saved over the master copy.
Maybe you’re making a character and you save over your master copy. Quickly do a Save As to make a duplicate, and then return to your master. In the lower right corner of Page 1 is a button that says “RESET”. Don’t worry..if you print, this button does not appear. …however… It will not restore the default images that the sheet started with. So you can either “clear” those or download a copy of the Character Folio from where you purchased it on PEG Inc or DriveThruRPG.
Those are all of the Advanced Features of the Character Folio…so far. Many fields are fillable, and some even have no character length so you can really cram info in if you want..but be careful. The more you put in there, the smaller the text gets.
I hope this aids your Savage Rifts games, and makes tracking your characters fun!
Last year I started to make a custom Character Folio for Savage Rifts. I posted a few prototypes around, but then I realized that I was using artwork that wasn't mine. So I asked Peg Inc if I could use the Rifts artwork (logos, etc).
I was informed that the artwork was licensed by PEG Inc from Palladium Books, and so it was not an option for me to use it on my custom folio sheet. I was given 2 choices.
1. I could remove the artwork and even the Rifts specific elements (like PPE and ISP) and use the more generic Savage Worlds elements with a Fan created branding. It would be mine to post on DriveThruRPG and would be a great asset for people.
2. I could see if Sean Roberson would let me create the official Savage Rifts SWADE Character Folio.
You bet I jumped at option 2!
It's been a great experience. Sean and his team have worked so hard on the Rifts for Savage Worlds content, and even delivered the Atlantis and the Demon Seas content to kickstarter backers. I can't wait for it to be out in the general public. You're all going to love it!
I had to pull my prototypes. But that's okay because the finished product is VASTLY superior.
